“I’ve never lifted a weight in my life. Isn’t it too late for me?”
We hear a version of that question almost every week at Flow Academy. The answer is no. It’s not too late. It’s not even close to too late.
What “strength training” actually looks like here
Forget the picture in your head of chalk, barbells, and grunting. In Active Fit 55+, strength and resistance work usually starts with your own bodyweight, a set of light dumbbells you could hold in one hand while carrying a grocery bag. We build from wherever you are today — not from where a 25-year-old would start.
A first session might include:
- Sit-to-stands from a sturdy chair
- Wall push-ups or counter push-ups
- Seated or standing rows with light dumbbells
- Marching in place with light hand weights
That’s it. No pressure to keep up with anybody else in the room.
Why starting now still matters
Muscle doesn’t ask how old you are before it responds to being used. Whether you’re 55, 65, or 80, showing up and moving consistently is what counts — not the number on your driver’s license. Many of our members tell us that after a few weeks of consistent classes, everyday movement feels easier: getting up off the couch, carrying laundry upstairs, playing with grandkids on the floor.
We’re not going to tell you strength training treats or reverses anything medical. That’s not our lane, and anyone who promises that is overselling it. What we can tell you is this: our classes are built around movement, coaching, and community, and a lot of our members simply feel more capable in their day-to-day life once they’ve made class a habit.
You set the pace, we set the plan
Coach Zaide and Professor Carlos Miller design every Active Fit 55+ class to be beginner friendly and low-impact by default. Every exercise has an easier version and a bit-more-challenge version, and our coaches will show you both. Nobody is handed a heavy weight on day one and left to figure it out.
Before starting any new exercise program, check with your doctor — that’s just good sense at any age. Once you’ve got the green light, all you have to do is show up in comfortable clothes and socks (our classes run on clean, padded mats, same as our jiu-jitsu classes).
