“I don’t want to be the one holding everyone up.” That’s the fear we hear more than any other, and it usually shows up right before somebody talks themselves out of booking a class. If you’re thinking about starting exercise at 60 and it’s been years — or decades — since the last time, let’s say this plainly: you do not have to be fit to start. That’s not a marketing line, it’s the actual design of the program.
That’s the fear we hear more than any other, and it usually comes right before someone almost talks themselves out of booking a class. So let’s say this plainly: you do not have to be fit to start Active Fit 55+. That’s not a marketing line. It’s the actual design of the program.
The room is not what you’re picturing
Picture the person you’re afraid of being — the one who’s out of shape, hasn’t exercised in years, maybe has a bad knee or a hip that talks back on cold mornings. That person isn’t the exception in our classes. That person is most of the room. People don’t usually walk into Active Fit 55+ already fit. They walk in because they want to be, or because they used to be and life got in the way.
Nobody is being compared to anybody else
There’s no leaderboard. No one’s time or weight or rep count gets called out. Every exercise has a version for wherever you are that day — whether that’s your first week ever moving intentionally, or you’re getting back into it after months off. Coach Zaide and Professor Carlos Miller build each class so that the person who’s never exercised and the person who used to be active feel equally welcome, working at their own pace side by side.
Beginner friendly is not a throwaway phrase here
It shows up in real details:
- Classes start with the basics — no assumed knowledge, no jargon
- Every move has an easier option shown first
- Coaches check in one-on-one, especially with new faces
- The mats are the same soft, padded surface used for our jiu-jitsu program — forgiving on joints, easy on bare feet or socks
What actually changes people’s minds
It’s rarely a pep talk. It’s usually the moment someone realizes the person next to them was just as nervous walking in. Community is one of our core values for a reason — “Where Fitness Meets Community” isn’t just a tagline, it’s the thing that gets people to come back for their second class after the first one goes better than expected.
You don’t have to get in shape before you start. Getting started is getting in shape.
One honest note before you start
We’re not going to tell you this program will fix a medical condition or guarantee any specific outcome — that’s never something we’d promise. What we can tell you is that our coaches are trained to meet you exactly where you are, safely and without judgment. Check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program, especially if you’ve been inactive for a while.
The only requirement is showing up
You don’t need to get in shape before you come to class — that’s what class is for. Book a Free Intro Class and see for yourself that the room is far more welcoming than you imagined.
